We had a long winter break this year – 4 weeks! I don’t think we will have the opportunity to enjoy any 4-week breaks until graduation, so I definitely tried to revel in our time off.
Over break, my family road-tripped from Los Angeles to The Grand Canyon, with a few stops before and after. We spent some time in Las Vegas and Zion National Park, the natural beauty of the latter easily eclipsing the artificial beauty of the former. But, I do have to admit that the lavish buffets definitely beat our makeshift sandwiches for the trails.
As it turns out, we bumped into quite a few dental students! I passed by one classmate in a casino on New Years’ Eve, another who was leaving the Grand Canyon just as we arrived, and yet another dental student (an undergraduate friend now at Penn) who shared rocky outcrop with us as we saw the sun dip behind the Canyon walls! Later in Zion, my brother and I ran into one of UCLA’s faculty with her son on a snowy trail. Dental friends were everywhere!
Besides exploring some of the Southwestern states, I spent time catching up on books I neglected to read. Favorite recent recommendation? Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Next novel I hope to read? The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin.
After four weeks of non-dental related activities, I feel re-energized and ready to start winter quarter. Onward ho!
